Around eight million women in the UK suffer from some sort of hair loss, which leads to a loss of self-confidence and self esteem.
A major cause of hair loss is chemotherapy, and some women can lose more hair than normal after giving birth.
However, there are less well known conditions where the hair loss can be permanent.
The most common alopecia conditions in women include:
Female Pattern Baldness

Female pattern baldness (called Ludwig Pattern Baldness) is much simpler than Male pattern baldness. It typically appears as thinning (or diffusion) in the crown behind the hairline and becomes more pronounced over time. Female pattern baldness is present when you can see the scalp through the hair.
Alopecia Totalis (AT)
Total loss of the hair on the scalp. The first thoughts of this form of alopecia were considered to be caused by stress, although, this has never been proven true. However as more and more individuals report hair loss as a symptom while going through periods of high stress (such as divorce, lost jobs, deaths in the family, and even childbirth) more doctors are looking into the medical connection of these two conditions. Researchers do agree that it is an autoimmune disorder.
Alopecia Universalis (AU)
Total loss of all hair on the body. The body shreds all the areas of hair and causes all body hair to be lost. This type of alopecia can affect a person of any age. This is considered the worst type of alopecia and is treated as an autoimmune disorder.
Alopecia Areata (AA)
Used to describe hair loss occurring in patches anywhere on the body.
This affects about one in 100 people, mainly teenagers and young adults. Symptoms include patchy hair loss. This condition is linked to a problem with the immune system. The hair follicles are not permanently damaged, and in many of these cases the hair grows back in a few months.
Alopecia Mucinosa
This is a type of hair loss which results in scaly patches.
Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA)
Female-pattern baldness, also known as male pattern baldness. It is a thinning of the hair to an almost transparent state, can occur in both men and women. Hair gradually thins with age but they often only lose hair from the top of the head. This usually gets more noticeable after the menopause. It is thought to be a hereditary form of hair loss.
Traction Alopecia
Traction alopecia is usually due to excessive pulling or tension on hair shafts as a result of certain hair styles. It is seen more often in women, particularly those of East Indian and Afro-Caribbean origin. Hair loss depends on the way the hair is being pulled. Prolonged traction alopecia can stop new hair follicles developing and lead to permanent hair loss.
Anagen Effluvium
This is the hair loss that is normally caused by chemicals used in the treatment of cancer.
At first the hair loss is patchy, but then often develops into total hair loss. Normally the hair will start to re-grow when the treatment as ended (usually about 6 months later).
Other drugs can also cause hair loss. Many medicines used to treat even common diseases can also lead to hair loss.
Scarring Alopecia
A form of alopecia which leaves scarring on the area of hair loss.
Telogen Effluvium
This is a form of hair loss where more than normal amounts of hair fall out. There is a general 'thinning' of the hair. Fortunately unlike some other hair and scalp conditions, it is temporary and the hair growth usually recovers.
There are many medical and surgical treatments available, some are more successful than others, but they all have one thing in common, they all take a long time.
