Causes of Hair Loss in Women

If you understand the common causes of hair loss you can take steps to prevent it or reduce its severity.

The Most Common Cause of Hair Loss in Women

tl.jpgWomen's bodies work differently than men's, and the most common cause of hair loss in women is not genetic. The most common causes are hormonal. Changes in hormone levels, linked to the menopause, pregnancy, thyroid conditions, or the stopping or starting of birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy.

Some scientific research show that over the past decade, hair loss has been on the rise in both men and women.  Some surprising evidence has developed a link between rising scalp estrogen levels associated with age and hair loss.

Fortunately, the hair loss is usually temporary and tends to subside in about twelve months.

Other Causes of Hair Loss

If the causes are not hormonal, the condition could be brought about by stress, illness, unhealthy eating, or hereditary, another cause could be harmful hair care techniques.

Aggressive hair styling, the wearing of tight hairstyles like braids and ponytails, and colouring, bleaching and perming can cause damage to the hair follicles and cause hair loss.

Stress can lead to increased hormones and can cause problems with the bodies systems responsible for hair growth. Infections can also play havoc with the bodies systems and cause hair loss.

Another cause of hair loss in women can be a poor diet. Dieting strictly and losing weight too rapidly can cause temporary hair loss. Women who do not get enough protein, zinc, or vitamins from their food can experience hair loss.

Chemicals used in Chemotherapy treatment for Cancer sufferers causes hair loss. Normally the hair will start to re-grow when the treatment has ended (usually about 6 months later). Other drugs can also cause hair loss. Many medicines used to treat even common diseases can also lead to hair loss.

Finally women can suffer from hereditary hair loss the same as men, female pattern baldness is a condition that results to from a reaction to testosterone in the body.  Testosterone is converted into DHT which then attacks the hair follicles and causes baldness, this is similar to the condition experienced by men although normally less severe.

Eliminating the Common Causes of Hair Loss

As most cases of hair loss in women are temporary there are a number of things you can do to eliminate the condition. Begin with a diet that is healthy, this ensures you receive all the proper nutrients you need to promote optimal hair growth. Exercise, this will help reduce stress and deliver the nutrients to your hair follicles.

Be careful not to damage your hair when styling it, avoid tight hairstyles that constantly pull on the hair follicles. If you colour your hair or use chemical treatments you should try to stop the practice before permanent damage is done, also try using a gentler shampoo.

You are unable to prevent illness, some hormonal changes or genetics, but you can take extra precautions to protect your hair growth. If you are pregnant, going through menopause or experiencing other hormonal changes use a gentle shampoo formulated to increase volume and body, and eat foods rich in soy to help protect hormonal health. If you are ill talk to your doctor about ways you can prevent hair loss.

There are many causes of hair loss in women, but they are normally temporary and easier to control when you understand your options.
