Types of Scalp hair and Hair Loss
There are two types of hair growing on our scalp. Understanding these can help us understand hair loss. The two types are vellus hairs, and terminal hairs.
- Vellus hairs are short hairs of about 1 mm long and are very fine, soft and shallow rooted. The vellus hair follicle does not have an adjacent sebaceous gland. They contain little or no pigment and are therefore colourless. Vellus hair is very delicate and easy to detach from the scalp, Sometimes a vigorous shampoo or scalp massage can cause vellus hair to fall out.
- Terminal Hairs are longer, thicker and stronger, and is the hair we all desire to have and keep. It’s the only hair we can cut, style and chemically treat. They are produced by hair follicles with adjacent sebaceous glands. Terminal hairs have large, darkly pigmented hair fibres that have a medulla at the innermost part. They are much deeper rooted and can grow up to 3 feet long. Terminal hairs lie much closer to the larger blood vessels that are their prime source of nourishment. The deeper the root the fuller, thicker, and more healthy the hair.
Hair Follicle Deterioration and Hair Loss
Hair follicles deteriorate when pollutants and toxins cause individual hairs to become smaller and finer until the follicle remains in the resting phase known as telogen and becomes totally dormant.
Hair follicles are sensitive to internal and external changes. Therefore changes to our diet, stress, drugs, health and living environment can cause our hair to revert back to vellus hair. This is called miniaturisation of hair.
When normal healthy terminal hair goes through the normal life cycle we have beautiful healthy hair. But when the hair follicle goes through a reduced life cycle we have more miniaturised hair, and then as each cycle happens more rapidly we get more miniaturised hair which eventually regress’s into shallow rooted vellus hair.
When the hairs life is shortened like this, our thick beautifull hair is replaced with thin miniaturised hairs, which can easily be epilated from the scalp, which increases the potential, that new hair may not grow back.
